Outdoorsy film review - is there a thread yet

I have seen a lot of outdoorsy themed films over the years. Some great, some good, some utter howlers, some that could be good if they consulted folks who actually venture into the outdoors, and some that should be given a caution before viewing for health and safety reasons. I wondered whether it'd...

Re: Ground conditions thread(s)?

With conditions changing constantly, I don't think ground condition groups are particularly useful, some of the advice given to novices on FB was usually suspect, blind leading the blind. That said the advice on here would probably more reliable than what's offered on FB. Anyways all the tools are ...

Re: Ground conditions thread(s)?

I did try this a few winters ago - https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=77049 There weren't nearly enough contributions to make it useful, but it might be worth another try. Thanks jmarkb - seems I am not the only person that thought this might a handy thing to have during ...

Re: Ground conditions thread(s)?

With all the information and pictures on the web and social media it almost makes going out and doing it redundant. What happened with just having a route marked out on a map and using ones skill and judgement to deal with whatever conditions and situations one encounters on the journey? Having no ...

Ground conditions thread(s)?

Before I say anything else I wanted to state that obviously, in winter, keeping an key on mountain weather and checking on SAIS for the avalanche forecast is always important. Checking forums on WH and similar sites, or checking the Fell Top Assessors if heading to the Lakes, can also be useful. Tha...

Re: A slice of the South Glen Shiel Ridge

The N ridge of Aonach air Chrith is a fun scramble - not too hard, but quite exposed. Could be a bit of a shock if you weren't expecting it, though, and maybe best avoided in adverse conditions. Oooooo, I hadn't thought about Druim na Ciche. Another possible option  BlackPanther's TR offer...

Re: Facing some fears in Torridon

Superb and well done on emptying the bottle. I love that you consulted with your mum as well!

Those pics of the inversion are sublime

Re: A slice of the South Glen Shiel Ridge

No need to go there and back (unless you want to) when doing the 3 you have remaining on the ridge; the eastern munros lend themselves quite well to a circular walk as there are some decent routes down off the ridge - I did the 4 eastern ones like that [https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/Forum/viewtop...

A slice of the South Glen Shiel Ridge

Stats (according to my Garmin): Day 1 (pitch at lochan and out and back along the west side of the ridge): Distance 11.77 m / Ascent 6046ft / Descent 3986 Day 2 (descent back to the glen): Distance 2.64 m / Ascent 137ft / Descent 2247ft Over the last few years I have revisited 14 Munros and only bag...

Re: Loch Pattack shoogly bridge - fixed?

We crossed it 10th August 2020. Yes, it's been fixed As an aside the MBA now have permission from the Estate to arrange for the removal of Culra (which has been closed for years due to asbestos) and build a new bothy on the same site. Hopefully removal work will take place later this year...

Loch Pattack shoogly bridge - fixed?

Back in March 2020 the the Ben Alder estate stated that the shoogly footbridge that crosses the Chaoil Reidhe as it enters Loch Pattack was out of use [see Essan's post https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=95777]. Wondered whether anyone knows whether this has been fixed? If...

Re: Altra trail runners

I have a pair of Altra King MTs and a pair of Superior 4s. MTs: excellent lugs for muddy boggy terrain, but the lugs would make them a bit pants for the mixed terrain you'll get on the WHW. I'm not super keen on the fit, but I probably got these in a half size too small. Superiors: I love these shoe...

Re: Walking dog harness

Hey wildgoose, another vote for Ruffwear. Our 1 yr old border terrier - also called Goose btw  - has a Ruffwear Hi and Light for general walking and a Ruffwear Flagline for hiking and running. We've found them to be durable and very functional. The Flagline is great. It hugs the chest and bell...
