Re: Cuillin advice?

The go to book back in the day (lol I’m only 56) was S P Bull’s Black Cuillin Ridge Scramblers guide. That’s the one with the Gillean West Ridge Gendarme (long since gone, and in many cases forgotten) on the cover. The West Ridge descent is interesting. 3 of us down climbed without a rope from the ...

Re: Cuillin advice?

Sorry I meant Blaven or Sgurr nan Eag. Blaven has a nice optional scramble to the south top and then a typical Cuillin scree path descent that requires careful nav so maybe a good way to get into the Cuillin mindset and see how you feel - Sgurr nan Eag you can carry on to Dubh Mor or Alastair (via a...

Re: Cuillin advice?

Hi there, Literally reading this having just finished my Cuillin munros yesterday on Sgurr MC. Like some above I went for the solo approach - I feel navigation and overcoming the challenges yourself is a big part of the experience so getting a guide to drag me up the hard bits would lack satisfactio...

Re: Snapping Stuff in Torridon

Awesome stuff Joe, and awesome "snaps" too (the pictures I mean). Hope you're not averse to joining me on a repeat visit to Liathach sometime

Re: Walls, Screes, Aretes and 2 'last munros' in a week

Thanks guys, An Teallach looks like an excellent contender for my outage. I just hope I won't end up 'accidentally' climbing that next weekend!

Walls, Screes, Aretes and 2 'last munros' in a week

No, OK, I haven't just compleated twice in the space of a week - infact I've still got just over 60 munros to do. But for years the Buachaille has been my earmarked finale, and for the week following climbing it, Carn Mor Dearg became my planned top-out. So having 'accidentally' gone and climbed it ...

An easter wander around Knoydart

Given the awesome weather over the Easter weekend and the fact that, for once, good weather coincided with a bit of time off work, I decided to head up to Kinlochhourn early on Monday armed with a backpack and head up into Knoydart. Leaving the busy carpark at 9.30 I headed out along the path on the...

Re: To Lurg or not to Lurg

Actually, having been up there now and seen what a superb area it is, I may now have considered that wee hill, would love to see what Loch Monar looks like from there with all the peaks circling it. There's another one just NE of it that looked brilliant, and if I hadn't had it with the weather by t...

To Lurg or not to Lurg

Indeed, to Lurg or not to Lurg. The plan: cycling up Strathfarrar to somewhere near Loch Monar, climbing Lurg Mor and Bidean a Choire Sheasgaich, heading down to Maol Bhuidhe and spending the night there. Then going South through the hills to Iron Lodge and up to the head of Loch Mullardoch to meet ...

A stravaig up the Cape Wrath Trail

Well, part of it anyway. The nature of modern life meant I had to cut my walk short, but still a great few days backpacking through the hills in weather you could only get in Scotland. I will go and carry on when life allows it. Day 1 On Tuesday I took the train up to Glenfinnan, arriving after 1pm ...

Grey Corries Plus

A big walk, part of preparing for another big walk The weather forecast has been so dire the last few weeks that Joe and I decided to make the most of the best forecast of a bad bunch - admittedly we were pretty sceptical of our chances of having any views or dry rocks to clamber over, and whether e...

Re: solar panels devices

Yes you can, and it will extend the battery life considerably. I had mine on standby for 4-5 days last year whilst away (albeit without using it) and it didn't die.

Re: solar panels devices

I looked into these a few weeks ago when planning a long trip, and in the case of my iPhone, it would have needed 16 hours of direct sunlight for a full charge which seems quite unlikely most of the year. I also looked at the AA battery phone chargers and they all sound like they're a bit rubbish, s...

Re: Onshore Wind Farms

I'm not sure what I make of the MCofS idea of protecting all Munros and Corbetts just because of their place on those lists and status as the 'most important mountains' in Scotland. For example, I would much rather see a windfarm go up on Carn Aosda (an already industrialised hill) or Carn na Caim t...
