Big routes of the year part 2 – 10 Mamores

Having done the 9 Fannichs a couple of weeks ago, I got thinking about whether I could break my most Munros in a day record. The 10 Mamores was the logical choice for a mere hillwalker like myself (not quite at the level for Ramsay’s round!) Similar to the 9 Fannichs, I decided to drive the night be...

Big routes of the year part 1 – 9 Fannichs

Lots of catching up to do on my walk diary but with a rainy day at home today, time to reminisce on a couple of bigger days out on the hills earlier in the year. First off, the 9 Fannichs from the South. I’ve done this route previously back in 2018 and with a good forecast and lots of daylight, I th...

Re: The Last Rotation of Earth

Good to see you both again, not much snow on the hills but it will be all change this week! The bothy was locked for covid last time I was there, I will have to go back again some time.

Cairngorm, Beinn Mheadhoin and Ben MacDui

A very cold Northerly wind, frosty with some icy patches but not so cold once the sun came out later on. Spectacular crags at Loch Avon with the frost making everything stand out. Too icy to scramble up the summit tor so left it for another day. Went over to Stob Coire Etchachan, great Munro top wit...

Burma Road Mountain bike

Went with Tom and Pete. A cloudy day with some rain to start but it dried up later with some sun. Nice steady climb up from Lynwilg and a good surface for biking. Took my time on the descents, the boys kindly waited for me  A really fun day exploring the hills by bike with some tea and scones i...

Beinn Bhrotain and Monadh Mor

Went with Tom. A bike and hike route, always good fun using the bike to get to the hills. Nice autumn colours coming through. Mist and rain closed in on the first top but we had the wind to our backs and it wasn't too cold. Steep going down from the bealach and then some pathless heather until down ...

An Teallach and tops

A glorious day, warm with no wind but not too hot for walking, a perfect hill day. A cloud inversion towards the North and Fannaichs with layers of mountains, fantastic lighting. Saw red deer, a flock of ptarmigan, pipits, plover and lots of goats. Great to add on the tops, interesting stone sculptu...

Sgurr Gaorsaic

A mild morning but cooler higher up, fine for walking but autumn is on the way. Some mist on the tops which was clearing, good views back to the bealach and Loch a'Bhealaich as I was climbing - the loch looked like a great fishing spot. Atmospheric with the views being revealed by the clearing mist ...

Garbh Bheinn and Belig

Some light mist over the tops but clear lower down with good views out over the sea, across to the Red Cuillin (Marsco looking great) and Bla-bheinn peaking through the mist. Fantastic to be back on Skye, this route would be a great introduction to the Cuillin. Some loose rock but easy enough scramb...

Glensulaig bothy

Another warm morning, cloud over the hills but fine in the glen. Nice walking by the river and through the trees. The bothy was still locked up so I didn't get inside but still a good spot to visit before I went home from the campsite.

Fraochaidh

A warm day with sunny spells, cloud coming and going on the top with a few spits of rain but it didn't come to much. Saw pipits, golden plover and a possible eagle. Decent enough path most of the way and fenceposts to follow on the long, winding ridge to the top. Nice quartz and crags on the final s...

Streap

A day of cloud coming and going, a waterproofs on and off day. High grass and bracken on the way up, glad of gaiters and waterproofs. Fantastic ridge to the summit and it cleared to give dramatic views of the cliffs and towards the Glenfinnan hills and Loch Arkaig. Saw a raven, pipits and frogs. An ...

Carn Ban and Meall'aChaorainn

Cycled along the track, a long way to go if you were on foot. Thick mist on the cycle in, inversion weather and the cloud burned off as I started walking. Clegs everywhere so kept moving, hot work on the climb up. Fine dry and soft grassy ground for walking with the bogs dried up. Amazing views to A...

Culra 4

Went with Brad and Tom. Cycled in and bivvied by the river - enough of a breeze to keep the midgies away and amazing night time skies. Woke up surrounded by mountain views framed by the dew on the grass. A glorious morning with Ben Alder and Lancet edge looking incredible. Excellent stalkers path on...

Lairig Ghru

Went with Maureen M, Maureen N, Libby, Ewan and Jonathan. A warm sunny start, lovely walking through the Cairngorms forests. Breezy with the wind being funneled at the pools of Dee but fine once we were through. Clouds building through the day and rainy for the final walk out from Derry Lodge, a sog...
