Re: Asking for trouble

how does the rule in Scotland that a bicycle is an aid to pedestrianism sit with electrically assisted and totally electrically powered bikes. I’m not entirely sure what your question is. https://www.gov.uk/electric-bike-rules Not that it matters to me now, but I was just wondering if, with the int...

Re: Asking for trouble

I'm too old and unfit to take my bike into the hills these days. Quite a few years ago I tried an electrically assisted Giant bike and it was so good but VERY expensive, so I couldn't afford one. This topic has got me thinking...how does the rule in Scotland that a bicycle is an aid to pedestrianism...

Re: Asking for trouble

In July 2005, while walking from Atholl to Feshiebridge via Glen Tilt, I came upon a young lad (maybe mid teens) crouched by a mountain bike near Geldie Lodge It was a good bike, certainly a lot more expensive than mine, and the tyres and one wheel were ruined. The front wheel rims were damaged and ...

Re: Scottish Big Five

More than once I've been kept awake at night by a corncrake when camping on Skye and the Outer Hebrides in the 1980's and I was thrilled to hear one on Lunga in June last year. Though they are hardly native to Scotland, I saw a Snowy Owl sitting on a rock in the Cairngorms in early April in the earl...

Re: Dog Hill Etiquette.

Many years ago when I lived in a house in the country, I was walking my Golden Retriever along the side of a field with sheep in and, as usual, I didn't have him on a lead, this being in the days before keeping dogs on leads became the done thing. My dog spotted some of the sheep coming slowly towar...

Re: Deer collisions

Next to Kielder Water in Northumberland, wooden posts set at a 45 deg angle, with red reflectors on, were installed at various places along the main road where deer were known too cross in the dark. The idea being that the car headlights would be reflected into the forest and deter the deer from app...

Re: Proposed bylaws on camp fires in Cairngorms.

A few years back, three of us had walked through the Lairig Gru from Atholl and it was dusk. Not too far from Picadilly there was a group of 4 lads who were camping near the Allt Druidh and they had a fire going strong on some gravel next to the water. We thought that was probably a sensible choice ...

Re: Mullered - XXXX hot with a very unpleasant after taste!

I remember, way back some 30 odd years ago, I was at the Southerly summit of Beinn a Chroin, on my way back to the car, when I got talking to another walker. He had climbed the hill the previous day in thick cloud and only found out back at home that the true summit was only a short distance away to...

Re: Lightning forecast

Me and my Brother-in-law were walking the Minigaig one very hot and clammy June day and as we were within 1/2 mile of the summit the lightning and thunder suddenly started all around us. There was no warning of it approaching, just a sudden attack of noise and light. We dashed to a nearby stream bed...

Re: Sunglasses May to mid June

Absolutely! I carry sunglasses with me all year round, it makes sense to protect your eyes from the sun. 8) This. Also, bring sun cream. We sometimes get our best weather in May in terms of sun and temperature. And don't forget to apply sun cream under your chin if there's snow cover. I got well bu...

Re: Wells of Dee

Another way out of the Garbh Choire on your 'most interesting' route is to follow the stream up from the refuge for about 1 km, then head SW to the slight spur that emerges about 150 m E of the low point on the rim of Garbh Choire Mor. Then over the 1265m top to the Wells. This variant gives great ...

Re: Wells of Dee

I've visited the Wells of Dee a few times. From Glenmore via Sron na Lairig and Braeriach,..... From Glen Feshie including Carn Ban Mor, Cairn Toul, Angels Peak and Braeriach From Glen Einich via Coire Dhondail (twice). The most interesting was from Sugar Bowl car park, through Chalamain Gap, then t...

Re: Brand levels

I still have a Patagonia fleece that was bought many years ago when they were a relatively new company and prices were reasonable. Back then, Berghaus and Karrimor were among the best gear you could buy, but they were made in the UK then. The quality suffered considerably when manufacturing was done...

Re: How has hillwalking changed?

There are two things that have changed for me. Back in the 60's & 70's I wore army surplus boots, cotton shirt, jeans, woolen jumper and a non-breathable nylon cagoule, It worked for me, but I'm bang up to date with gear now. Secondly, I notice from my own walks and others walk reports that ther...
