Quick one:

All the routes I've seen on the WRs on here seem to come off Driesh by the Shank of Drumfollow. How does the route off the Main Buttress by The Scorries compare?

Is it likely to add much to the time?

Very steep, wet and grassy underfoot and cliffs and crags to be avoided very risky in all but the driest conditions and you need to get back on the main path to cross the river anyway.

The Scorrie is hard going. As NickyRannoch says - very steep but I like the views from it much better than the Kilbo. There is no path but it's a very quick ascent/descent route. Hopefully this photo looking down it from near the top gives a bit of an idea of what it's like?

Nice photo. that is very useful.

Everything off to the right is cliffs so you should bear well left of that. You can make directly for the trees at the bottom but you will be walking through pathless forest to make the path.

The Kilbo is a bit of a pain in the hoop to descend it has to be said. i dont know why it is no worse than any other path in the hills but just seems to be never ending and a long way back on yourself. I also had a thorughly unpleasant and long descent down it once with the axe in winter conditions so I am not well disposed to it.

I seem to recall at least a trace of a path on the Scorrie. It's probably more enjoyable in ascent than descent, though.

We did pick up a path that came out at the sign in the woods 'The Scorrie' but it was only really obvious once we were off the steep part. I got the impression it was a kind of forgotten route. The sign was old and not kept like the kilbo ones and if nobody really uses it I guess whatever path was there will have faded away. It was only May that I came down it so I remember it quite well. Was my friend's first Munro! Definitely agree it would be a better ascent than descent route.

Guess it must have fallen into disuse like you say - must be 10 years ago since I went up that way.

Looks like it'd be worth a go on a calm day but given the wind that's expected on Saturday I'll maybe stick to the conventional route.

Cheers for the advice though.

My OH tried to make us walk up that way in May as he thought it looked far better than the 'real' path....
It looked steep and pretty loose to me and I refused!!!
