THAT is soooo COOL! :) 8)

Couldn't be easier! Upload a gpx and it automatically generates the map and overlays the track. Awesome!

Remember that walked tracks are usually more accurate than those you draw from a map though... and the OS have copyright in what you draw on their maps.

AndrewP,
If you still need a piece of wire, I have a spare for the delivery price plus £2.

I'm experimenting with KML to GPX conversions (http://www.poieditor.com/poi_convert/kml-to-gpx/), and whilst I seem to have a GPX file, it is not giving me a map with a track when I upload it. :-(

Hallo

I might be a bit late with this, but you can get a serial to USB lead.

NB. I've edited the first post to reflect the new easy way to put an OS map in your trip reports.

Hi johnnyaztec

I can't get that error. Could you have another go just in case it was a temporary blip on our server or your internet connection?

Cheers

Yes, you need to save it as a GPX file (.gpx), which should be ok unless you have a very very old version of Memory Map...

Following a comment from Mountain Coward in this post I thought it might be useful to write an instruction that others could follow to create and insert route maps in their walk reports. This is for those who, like me, do not own a GPS device and need to create maps manually.

I then found this thread so thought it best to insert the instruction here.

Here is a pictorial guide showing how to do this...

1. When creating a Walk Report click on the text in the Route Editor section of the header:

Picture1.jpg

2. You will be presented with the latest Release Notes for the Route Editor software. Read it and obey

Picture2.jpg

3. Close the Release Note window and type the name of the location you want to move the map to in the "Move map to" input box on the left of the following window and hit Return or Enter. The map you want should now be displayed in the main window.

Picture3.jpg

4. You are now ready todraw your route onto the map. To navigate and zoom in and out you use the controls in the top left corner of the window. When your cursor is over the map it will appear as a thin cross. Move the cross to your starting point and click the left mouse button. This will lat down a blue circle marking the start of your route. Move along the route clicking the left mouse button to lay down points along the route. In the following example I started at Barber Booth car park (267m) and then clicked 10 points along the route to the 517m point. The software draws the blue line and marker points as you move along the route.

Picture4.jpg

5. Continue along your route until you get to the end point (for a linear walk) or back to the starting point. If you make a mistake you can move the points by hovering the cursor over the circles (a hand symbol will appear as the cursor), left click and hold and drag the point to where you want it to be. You can then continue clicking new points along your route.

Picture5.jpg

6. When you have completed drawing your route click on "Add to walk report" in the left hand pane of the map window. Your map will now appear in the list of attachments to your Walk Report drafting window.

Picture6.jpg

7. To position your Route Map where you want it to appear in your report: insert the cursor at the appropriate point in the walk report drafting window and click on the "Place inline" button below the link to your route. A placeholder will be inserted into your walk report so that the map appears where you want it.

When you submit your Walk Report it should now contain your map

This is the one I created for this explanation: http://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=5073&p=31058#p31058
