My first red squirrel

My first red squirrel

Postby Oldman » Thu Mar 01, 2012 4:40 pm

About mid day just south of Kinlochard on Tuesday 28th Feb my friend and I spotted our first ever red squirrel - what a treat. There was no time to get the camera out but it was definately a red squirrel - beautiful. I don't know if Loch Ard Forest is noted as a red squirrel area - anyone else know?

Red squirrels are great, so much cuter than the greys.

You can report your sighting here: http://www.scottishsquirrels.org.uk/

They have been reported there, have a look at the interactive map here: http://www.scottishsquirrels.org.uk/regional/in-your-area/

They really are beautiful, as are ( if I dare say it ) greys.
We saw a few whilst holidaying at Gateouse of Fleet last October, a great place to see them if you want to.
We have them here around Peebles too but it's a mixed population so the reds are not often seen. I've only been lucky once since we moved here in summer 2010.

Loch Ard is a Red Squirrel area. The sculpture trail there (it depicts the wildlife food chain in the forest) features one sculpture representing the struggle between Red and Grey squirrels but depicts it as a battle from star wars with the squirrels fighting it out with light sabres and ligthning bolt
