I think this is a sparrowhawk i spotted near Listonshiels, need to get myself a proper dslr i keep telling myself.

Nay, a kestrel has a slatey-blue/grey back/wimgs. I reckon sparrow hawk.

Have you not just described what a Sparrowhawk looks like? Or even a Peregrine?

Checked my Collins Bird Guide and I reckon Kestrel, and a lady one at that.
It doesn't seem to have the right colour in it's eyes for sparrowhawk and those markings on its back / wings are classic Kestrel. It seems to have that dowdier appearance so common to many birds of the female persuasion. A male Kestrel has a grey head and bolder markings.

indeed it is a kestrel, having just found my little Collins gem scottish birds book hiding at the back of my map drawer, thought i had lost it.
