Must-do Corbetts?

Must-do Corbetts?

Postby clivegrif » Sun Mar 11, 2012 9:44 pm

Hello

I haven't done many of the Corbetts and it is unlikely I will get to do them all.

However, I want to do the best of them, but which ones are they?

Would welcome your views (light blue touch-paper & retire....) :D

Not that I've done very many but Beinn Aden in Knoydart was pretty good, also Rhum and Arran.

I've not done many either, but I would recommend The Cobbler if only for the final scramble to the summit.

I was going to recommend The Cobbler but I notice that you have done it.

I also notice you have not done Sail Mhor! That might need rectifying shortly.

Phew! Where to start?

Foinaven and Arkle
Beinn Spionnaidh and Cranstackie
Cul Beg and Cul Mor
Ben Aden
Sgurr a Choire-bheithe
Sgurr nan Eugallt
Aonach Buidhe
Garbh Bheinn (Ardgour)
Sgurr na Ba Glaise, Rois Bheinn and An Stac (Moidart)
Beinn Damh
Baosbheinn and Beinn an Eoin
Fuar Tholl
Bidein a Chabair (Glen Dessarry)
Beinn na h-Eaglaise and Beinn Caorach (Arnisdale)
Beinn Dearg (Torridon)
Ruadh Stac Beag
Beinn Dearg Mor and Beinn Dearg Beag (Fisherfield)
Sail Mhor
Garbh-bheinn (Skye)
Sguman Coinntich
Beinn Trilleachan (Etive)
Creach Bheinn and Fuar Bheinn (Kingairloch)
Sgurr Innse and Cruach Innse

That's just ones I've been up and can personally testify are great - there's loads more I'm really looking forward to (links to my reports for most above, some better quality than others). I've only included hands-down great hills there as well. I've had some amazing days out on some of the less exciting ones but I've left them off the list.

I tend to do Corbetts and Grahams together now - there are loads of great Grahams too, and you often get better routes combining them than just a quick up and down an isolated Corbett. I'll not list any here though.

Malky has put up a fair list there for you as have others, one that is missing though is An Ruadh-stac. I only got so far up in when Kim wanted to retreat but it's a fine looking hill. Others i can vouch for would be the Arran Corbetts :D

Agh! Missed that one! Actually I thought of another 10 or so since making that list - so difficult to make a difinitive list. I should have also mentioned:

Beinn Bhan and Sgurr a Chaorachainn (Applecross)
Beinn an Lochain
Beinn Each
Creag Mac Ranaich
Ben Vrackie
Ben Tirren
Buidhe Bheinn (this is a sort of double-summited Corbett with Sgurr a Bhac Chaolais, but is by far the better of the two)
Garbh Bheinn (Loch Leven)
Ben Resipol
Sgurr Ghiubsachain (Loch Shiel)

I've tried to put slightly less bias in the NW there, but it's difficult, as that's where I do most of my walking.

Pretty well everything in Ardgour, Morvern and Moidart! They can all be easily reached from the Fort William area, if you're willing to make some trips on the Corran ferry.

I knew it was worth asking!

Thanks everyone for the contributions so far - especially Malky who has clearly put a lot of time and effort into the two lists.

I have to agree with the NW bias, having spent a lot of time in Inverness it was those Munros that I went to first, and there are clearly a lot of cracking Corbetts up there too.

I was eyeing up the north north west ridge of Sgurr Ghiubsachain (Loch Shiel) which features in the Scotland's Mountain Ridges book by Dan Bailey, and there are plenty of the rest that I recognise but haven't climbed yet.

I may need to pluck up some courage to venture onto that ferry at Corran again - the last time I did the ignition barrel on my car seized up, and I went back & forth across the water 5 times with the Ferry Engineer belting lumps out of the steering column.

Thanks for your efforts - should keep me quiet for a while!

The Merrick, Hart Fell and White Coomb are all well worth a visit especially as a change to the Highlands. Corserine, Shalloch on Minnoch, Cairnsmore of Carsphairn and Broad Law aren't bad either, and some wonderful names!

The circular route from Glen Trool over Benyellary, The Merrick, Mullwharchar, Dungeon Hill and Craignaw is certainly one of the finest hill walks in Scotland.

I'd second that and they are also closer for you. Another one that hasn't been mentioned is Streap, i havn't climbed it but it sounds like the Corbetts answer to the Aonach Eagach

I'm of a similar mind to Malky over the hills NW of the Moine Thrust, and the Corbetts of Wester Ross in particular. Not only are just about all of them smashing hills in their own right, they tend to offer better viewpoints than the Munros.

One of my favourites hasn't been mentioned yet: Beinn Airigh Charr, which has a truly exceptional view into Fisherfield.

Haven't done many myself but the Assynt & Torridon ones appeal the most to me. Surprised that the triple summited Quinag hasn't been mentioned yet. This together with the nearby Cul Beag & Cul Mor (both Assynt) & Beinn Dearg (Torridon) - which all have been mentioned - are at the top of my todo list.
