walking in lake district: suggestions?

Postby gordon l » Thu Jul 12, 2012 8:10 pm

Hello all,

Having dipped my toes in Lake District land with a perfect day doing a round of Hellvellyn and surroundings in January I'm keen to explore the area a little more this summer. Also, sick of checking the weather and seeing nothing more than clag coating the hills on my own doorstep! I'm looking for an interesting route that takes in several Wainwrights and is less than 3 hours from Glasgow. Love scrambling. Any ideas would be gratefully received. :D
Cheers

A few thoughts

Langdale Pikes via Jack's Rake
Wasdale - Black Sail - Shamrock Traverse - Pillar - Steeple - Yewbarrow
Great Gable traverse (Sty Head - Beck Head via Napes Needle)
Blencathra round (Halls Fell-Sharp Edge)

I'll second Pillar and the Shamrock Traverse :)

A round of Eskdale is good too, and doesn't seem to appear in guidebooks. Takes in Crinkle Crags, Bowfell and the Scafells among others:

Second the Eskdale round. If you're feeling energetic you can start this from Eskdale rather than Cockley Beck and take in Hard Knott and Harter Fell (and possibly, although it's a bit of an anti-climax, Green Crag).

Note I'd stay off Hard Knott Pass at this time of year. Even if you're fully confident with 1 in 3 gradients, hairpin bends and disintegrating road surfaces, you run the risk of getting stuck behind someone who isn't and proceeding at walking pace with lengthy stand offs for on-coming cars.

You think it doesn't rain in the lakes? If it didn't rain there wouldn't be any lakes!!!!

Tyrone off corrie has just been to the lakes, wonder if he went walking?

I've just been down to Keswick for a couple of days and although it rained the day I had planned to do Skiddaw, the day I arrived and left were lovely. The fells around derwentwater looked rocky and interesting. You could even hire a rowing boat and add it on to your round. One thing I did notice though was the sheer number of people in Keswick kitted out in outdoor gear. It is a busy wee bit!

The Blencathra round is a good shout. Sharp Edge is always fun.
Especially if you did Striding Edge on Helvellyn and enjoyed it.

You could do the Scafells as well, but that could take a fair bit longer than 3 hrs.

I'd defo say the Blencathra round also, but only 1 Wainwright on that route. Any of the walks from Wasdale are always a winner with me,a stunning place with some rocky & steep sided hills & of course the advantage of the Wasdale Head Inn for refreshments! Plenty of other routes on this excellent site which i've been using for a number of years now: http://www.stridingedge.net/

Wherever you get to i hope you enjoy it. MM.
