Hill Nomenclature

Hill Nomenclature

Postby Ibex » Sun Jul 15, 2012 8:22 pm

Climbed a fair few mountains in the Lakes and am starting to plan some more walks into Wales and Scotland.

Its an exciting time, as the whole thing is new and full of possabilities, but I would love to know more about the languages.
I've picked up a few words, such as I know that crib goch means red comb, but i'd love to learn more. I find its more satisfying to know a little more about the mountains your climbing as you go.

Does anyone know of any good sites that help teach you a bit about the mountain names, in either Welsh or Gaelic?

Cheers.

Hi Ibex.

The hill and route description pages on both this site and Munro Magic have a loudspeaker icon. Click on it for pronunciation and meaning. You'll hear a different dialect of Gaelic on each site!

The Wiki pages for many hills with Gaelic and Welsh names also give a translation, and pronunciation in the international phonetic alphabet.

Thanks MacCookie, I may look that up some time!

Simon - I found this on the site for one mountain name (chosen at random) http://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/hewitts/y-lliwedd

Where is the button to listen to the pronounciation? Sorry for the ignorance!

Aha. That would make sense.
Just listened to a load of names, and most of them came out as I thought they would sound. I was surprised!

Thanks for the help everyone! Just can't wait to get up in those hills now!
