A nice close encounter with a 3 metre Basking Shark whilst sea kayaking near Portsoy on the Moray Firth. These are the second largest fish in the world and can grow up to 11 metres so this one was a bit of a tiddler.
It was feeding very close in to the cliffs and a team of climbers on a nearby route had a great view as it passed right under their route.
It continued feeding close to me for about 15 minutes before I paddled away, very unconcerned about my presence and passing me very closely as it moved back and forth.
After paddling to Whitehills, we got a fish supper and ate it overlooking the harbour at Portsoy, where (presumably) the same shark was again close inshore right near the harbour and giving good views to a group of folk enjoying the evening sunshine.
There's no such thing as a dull day is there?
