There is a proverb in Gaidhlig which goes like this
Tachraidh na daoine, ach cha tachair na cnuic............ In lose translation to the vastly inferior English it would go something like
Men will meet, but the hills will not.
Later on in this report i will confirm this is indeed the case
A week of sub zero temprature had me heading for the hills today and Sgurr Dhomhuill is my nearest neighbour
Toiseachd sin aig 320m air braigh Poll Ach ... we started at the Polloch brae with only one car in the space at the brow ..strange there is usually no cars up here
- Sealtainn .. Sron an t Sithein bho braigh Poll Ach
Anyway a trudge along An druim garbh is always a pleasure in ice and hard at that tis a boggy ridge normally
- An druim garbh is Sgurr Dhomhuill
- Reoite lochan
- Sealtainn Iar leis Resipole is Loch Seile
A maze of wee lochans and boulders up here and a long hack to boot soon enough i was in the snow field
agus an Sgurr a'sealltainn math !
- Sgurr Dhomhuill bho an bealach beag
- Air ais a ribhist
- An cu air a druim
Deep and firm and out of the biting wind with the grian on you warm enough with grand visibility all round bar a few truim showers belting in from the West
- Garbh Bheinn nan Aird Gobhair
- Frasach
- Beinn Neibhis air an tir mor
Bha an rathad tean ...the route was tough given the snow a lot of ups and downs then we hit the Bealach at 620mtrs a steep drop down to face Dhomhuill hiself
- Sgurr Dhomhuill
He is a steep bodach from this side and i started straight up the face using the wee gullies and ledges definetly axe territory but to rocky for crampoons so they stayed in the bag. I was about 30metres up when i started hitting sheet ice rock faces hidden under light snow so after a few arse clenches i retraced the steps back down with a thought to traverse to the bealach south of me , its South /West facing and gets some sun so like to no be as bad.
As i readjusted myself an cu started yowling just below and i see a figure appear from the Carn nan Nathrach side and onto the Bealach !
Remember the proverb ? .................. Tachraidh na daoine, ach cha tachair na cnuic
I recognised the stick (3rd edition) he recognised the dog ...... it was Robert Phillips i'd last banged into him on Bidean way back October last year
We joined up and made our traverse a bit to the South no quite the bealach on soft snow with the occasional slippy boulder to be wary for ..its a fair pull to the mullach mind
- Air a mhullach sealtainn Iar
- An tir mor
- Air a Cárn
A twenty minute break out the wind on the mullach and a bit to eat was long enough in the freezing conditions ...gle bhoidheachd
We headed down retracing the steps and at 2pm the sun was already heading down
- An greine a dol sios mu thrath
- An rathad sios
The haul back up to the minor summit on druim garbh put us off with the snow an all so we traversed down gradually into Gleann Sron an t Sithein before picking up height again near the mine workings to put us back on the druim out the snow line. From good experience its a wet wet palce so again glad to have a hard frozen ground under foot.
Bha sin air ais aig a'braigh mu dheidhinn 4.30pm ..... back at the car just as dark fell a grand day ,longer than anticipated with good company slainte Robert and mind the offer of a berth in future
