Lincolnshire parakeets

Lincolnshire parakeets

Postby Avocetboy » Sun Jan 06, 2013 12:19 pm

First spotted these a couple of months ago flying near my house. I contacted a local parrot sanctuary to see if they had any escapees, but they had not. I have continued to see and hear them on and off over the last few weeks. This morning, I took the opportunity of taking my dog a walk at a local nature reserve where the River Witham meets the wash and found the pair of them alive and well and enjoying the abundance of berries. Does anyone know what species they are

Ring-necked Parakeet.
Now pretty common in SE England - 6000ish in wild.
Not entirely sure where Lincolnshire is but if it is where I think it is may be a bit North of their usual range.

Just had a look and that is definitely what they are. So, this means that they are probably not escapees, but natives that have ventured North (Boston, Lincs)...Pretty unusual.

Not as stupid as I thought. Just checked and Lincolnshire is exactly where I thought it was!

I saw a flight of parakeets in London when I was there a few weeks back. Seems they are getting more common than pigeons now folk have stopped feeding the pigeons. Now if we could get them all to say "Pieces of eight" as they fly about ... :D

After further research and contact with local birdwatching group, it would appear that they are Alexandrine parakeets. Slightly larger than Ring Necked with a red mark at the top of the wing.

Wild parakeets are pretty common where I live in Wallington (London Borough of Sutton). When I put up bird feeders on moving in two years ago, the first bird I saw on them was a parakeet. I've considered filling a feeder with dried fruit instead of nuts.

I like the idea of training them to say "Pieces of eight" Though I suspect it would become irritating after the first few hundred times.

Perhaps if we gave them eyepatches and the occasional little wooden leg? Am I taking that too far?
