Schiehallion in Winter

Schiehallion in Winter

Postby py1875 » Wed Feb 13, 2013 11:20 am

Hey,

Just wondering people's experience of Schiehallion in winter. Pretty hard ot get an accurate avalanche forcast as it dosnt sit within the mian ranges covered by Sais. Looking to climb on Sunday this week. Weatehr forcast looks fine with some light snow today but then temps rising above freezing for the rest of the week.

Will be fully prepared for winter conditions (crampons and ice axe packed) but just unsure of the general risk given the ever growing number of accidents this season so far in the Scottish hills.

any advice is appreciated.

I've always thought it would be fine for a winter day. My main worry with it's more if the road to it is accessible.

as long as you are heading up the standard track their shouldn't be much of an avalanche risk. Once your are up on the boulder field its a fairly shallow slope and the path up to there is more less on the crest of the farily flat ridge.

Just make sure your nav is spot on, some fairly steep drops on the south side, be aware of cornices if there have been northerly winds.

Like NickyR says. Main path should be safe.

main routes fine as others have said. the top part i usualy find easier in winter as the boulder field is covered in firm snow. pick a clear day and navigation wont be a problem plus there are some great views.

Possible inversion forecast for Sunday at the moment (although still a long way off), so might be a good day for a walk even if the weather doesn't look promising at valley level :)
