Achnashellach to Achnasheen

Achnashellach to Achnasheen

Postby excogitating » Fri Apr 26, 2013 10:22 am

Hi,

I've got a couple of days over which to cover ground from Achnashellach to Achnasheen this week. I've not hiked in this bit of the Highlands before - I've been looking around the website and can't see anyone posting a direct route - hoped someone might have some suggestions?

We're both pretty experienced hikers and can deal with four boot type climbs with some scrambling etc, we've got our own camping gear - no climbing equipment with us this time though.

V grateful for any ideas!

Hi there. It's a funny one since it's across the grain of the transport network. So the direct route is just up the road! High alternatives appear contrived and boggy. You're looking at some moorland bumps but being in that area there's loads of amazing views and just a brilliant atmosphere. If you go north from Achnashellach you can follow Carn Breac etc through the thinning triangle to come out at Achnasheen. But it's not so far, about 20km. Or go to the south of the road; over the tops of Moruisg; about 25km.

There's no scrambling, landrover tracks and occasional paths. But really it's a lot of low-level moorland slogging. I'd suggest something further west, but if you really have to travel between these two, perhaps think about doing the hills at either, 1 a day and travel between them by train? You've got a choice of Beinn Liath Mor, Sgorr Ruadh and Fuar Tholl at Achnashellach and Fionn Bheinn at Achnasheen.

Carn Breac and Beinn na Feusaige to the north would be a good walk - if you want to see how it looks, Foggieclimber has posted a report of exactly that (although he didn't post it on this site):

While the hills are of fairly minor interest compared to the bigger ones nearby, you do get some stunning views of Torridon and Coulin from here.

As Kevin says, the two Munros (sorry, just the one now) on the south side of the road could be done too.

How about:

Day 1 - Sgurr Coinneach, Sgurr a'Chaorachain, Maoile Lunndaidh, camp near Glenuaig Lodge
Day 2 - Sgurr nan Ceannaichean, Moruisg + eastern tops, out to road at Luib.

or

Day 1 - Coire Lair round (clockwise), camp by River Coulin
Day 2 - Carn Breac and Beinn na Feusaige

To add to this. There's a 10km to reach the foot of Sgurr Choinnich. All wonderful hills though.

Good point. Leaving out Maoile Lunndaidh might be more sensible!
