Hawfinch in the garden

Hawfinch in the garden

Saw a hawfinch in the garden today. We have had a lot of different bird sightings lately - mealy redpoll, a male blackcap, brambling and lots of goldfinches and siskins - think they like the niger seeds we have been putting out

thanks, it's always good to see different birds going about in the garden. Hopefully it will stick around for a while :)

It might be worth reporting it to your local bird recorder, just for the records. They're not very common in Scotland, so this might make a helpful recording. You can see the list of recorders here: http://www.bto.org/volunteer-surveys/birdtrack/bird-recording/county-bird-recorders

thanks, I have just sent them an email. I might get in touch with the RSPB at the loch of Strathbeg too so they can keep track for their records

Top bird and great photo. Never seen one, even down here in Hampshire. Do you know what it was feeding on? I've heard they can crack cherry stones!

It seemed to be feeding on the seeds which we scatter on the grass - just mixed wild bird seed. It was back later in the day underneath the peanut feeder so it seems to like feeding on the ground rather than hanging on the feeders. Hope you manage to spot one some time :)
