Walks & Sights in Shetland ???

Walks & Sights in Shetland ???

Postby Frazerrobbo » Tue Aug 27, 2013 9:43 am

Hey WH folks,

I came online this morning to check out walks in Shetland and realised there are none listed on this site? What happened to Shetland? haha,

Anyway . . can anyone point me in the direction of a good online source for 'walks and must see's' on Shetland?

Cheers,
Fraz

I've never been, but this site looks useful: http://www.walkshetland.com/
There's a Cicerone guidebook, too: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Walking-Orkney-Shetland-Isles-Northern/dp/1852845724

We had a short holiday in Shetland in 2010 and although we didn't do any serious (hill) walking, we were shown some of the sights, also we had 5 sunny days which made a great deal of difference.

I'd recommend Eshaness and also a coastal walk from Huxter (by Sandness) past old water mills and round the cliffs with views to Papa Stour and out to Foula.

The Burn of Lunklet is also worth a visit, as is the coast south from the chapel at Sand.

We didn't get to Unst but did spend a day on Yell which has some lovely beaches right at the north end of the island. Don't ignore Lerwick which has great character and some interesting streets.

Just about any of the coast is interesting/ stunning with great sea views around just about any headland, and in every bay.

Have a great time and I hope you have as good weather as we did. I'm sure you'll come back with lots of your high quality pictures to share.

I was on Shetland in 2010 and went up to Unst, did a lovely walk round Herma Ness.

Recommended.

You should also go to St. Ninians Isle. Stuff that seems awesome include Foula and Fair Isle, however they are remote and you can only get there weather permitting.

There is a charter running trips to Mousa with the best Broch in Scotland. You can also go to Noss and see birds. Esha Ness is good for awesome cliffs (although when I was there the fog was so thick I could have fallen down and would not have noticed :D )

If you use the search function on these forums you will find a few reports too.

For general shetland stuff you can also check http://www.shetlink.com/

The folks there might or might not give useful advice

Shetland is awesome and I am sure you will find great walks there!

Forgot some stuff: Go visit Jarlshof, one of the finest Wheelhouse/Broch/Mideval multi package ruin you'll ever come across. And if you are there between May and August, Sumburgh Head is a good Puffin spot. They have a webcam (now nothing to see puffinwise obviously). http://www.shetland.org/puffincam/index.php?file=stream2

Check out The Relative Hills of Britain by Dawson. There are 20 Marilyn's to do up there, I think about 13 of them are easily accessible. It's beautiful , had a week there in May last year and did a few of the hills plus some of the coastal walks. Enjoy!

Having lived and worked in Shetland for a considerable time and depending on how long you have/transport etc, there is a lovely walk to a place called Fethaland in the north of the island. A link( www.walkshetland.com ) gives you information on the walk.
I have gone there on a couple of occasions and it really is a fantastic walk and when you get there you will find the remnants of an old fishing village.
I think it says difficult to challenging but if I remember correctly it was fairly easy going. I do remember the farmer who has the land at the start of the walk putting a "bull in field" warning at the start of the walk to deter people from shortcutting through his field but that was a good few years ago now!
Anyway as with the other good ideas posted its worth a wee look,,, oh and a walk across the unique beach linking the mainland to St Ninians Isle and a walk around the island itself is rather pleasant too! Short but sweet! :o
