Hi Gammy LW,

That's not necessary:

See https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/on-the-trail/handhelds/etrex-30/prod87774.html. IPX7 means that it's waterproof against immersion up to 1 meter deep (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IP_Code). I haven't put that to the test, but rain is not going to be a problem.

I've been carrying mine around in just a simple holster that I clip onto the shoulder strap of my backpack, and I've seen some rain in the Highlands - never a problem. I've also had it taped to the deck of my kayak, and that also has never been a problem.

Cheers,
Stefan

Yes they are definately waterproof.. Mine still seems to be going strong, despite the rubber rand round the edge coming loose.. 8)

I dropped my etrex 10 in a river (I meant to do it, honest) and it survived with no ill effects. Does fit in one of these though if you want the extra peace of mind.

Many thanks for all the replays folks I new it was waterproof but just wanted the extra reassurance of a waterproof cover. As Rocky Rab has pointed out Aquapac have handy waterproof covers and there is one that does a small camera I have my eye on.

Will an extra layer of plastic between you and the GPS not make it even more difficult to read in the rain?

In which case how about a small zip lock plastic bag :-)
