Large paw print on sgorr Ruadh

Large paw print on sgorr Ruadh

Postby DEADEVEN » Sun Jan 19, 2014 4:39 pm

Seen a series of these very large paw prints yesterday,on the nw ridge of sgorr ruadh leading down to bealach coire lair, I thought they where very different to anything I've seen before so I took a pic alongside a Morton's roll, they caught my eye because they where the only prints within about 70yds of any other prints and there was one line of them up to a point below the summit and one line back down, they also had what seemed like 3 sometimes 4 spike marks at the front of the print!! Can I have your thoughts please?

Person wearing crampons front-pointing ? Saint Bernard ? Alsation ? Badger ? If you could see claw-marks it was no cat.

Can't help with which animal made those, but I've noticed paw prints get bigger with every freeze thaw cycle, so they may have been smaller when first made.
Or maybe Mortons bake very large rolls.

Mountain hare or fox are the two most likely options: did the tracks have a distinctive 1-1-2 pattern like this? http://static2.merinet.com/image_uploader/photos_12/large/blanchot-tracks_tueda-reserve_meribel-mottaret.jpg
I think the large size may be due to their being a thin crust on the snow which has cracked in a circle around the actual print.

Nope not like these, think the freeze thaw cycle is the most likely culprit, and there was quite a crust on the snow, thanks I'll sleep a wee bit easier when camping around this area in future
