Otter

Otter

Postby Caberfeidh » Tue Jan 28, 2014 11:26 am

On a day out with the current Mrs Caberfeidh we stopped at the Woollen Mill Centre at Aberfoyle. Drinking coffee by the window and looking out at the flooded scenery, I noticed what I thought was a bit of driftwood floating down the river. As I watched, it poked a head up, curved over and with a flick of a long pointy tail it dived - an otter! He was good enough to crawl out onto a fallen tree and pose for us. Sorry about the poor quality pics, I had of course left my good camera in the car, and had to use a mobile phone camera. And all from the comfort of a nice warm cafe with excellent coffe in a range of styles and flavours ( Hazelnut Latte for Mrs Caberfeidh and I ). On a more hillwalky note, the wool centre shop is doing a sale at the moment; get your craghopper fleeces and trousers for much cheapness - 50% off ! A mere twenty quid for a good pair of hillwalking trousers... :D

a significant improvement on your recent eel epistle Caberfeidh.

Q: how much meat do you get on an otter? Worth going on a night-time expedition with a tin of tuna and a claw hammer?

Having once skinned an otter, (a truly gruesome task), I can vouch that there is very little meat on an otter. It looked uncannily like that creature in the Alien movies which burst out of John Hurt's chest.

Talking of which, would anyone like to buy an otter skin? Ideal for sporran, hat, etc.

otter skins used to fetch very good prices i recall, around 1958. as you say horrendous to skin and scrape, and virtually no meat.

i dont recall investigating the intestines for liver heart or kidneys, probably given to the dogs
