Beinn a' Chroin Summit

Beinn a' Chroin Summit

Postby Tomsie » Sat Mar 29, 2014 9:49 pm

After doing Beinn a' Chroin today, went to 3 cairns, on the map its 940 and 942, doesn't show a third height. I was using the 1:50. My log here http://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=40522 shows 942 and 938, but once you zoom in it only shows a height as 940 and 938.

Any info on this, thanks

From west to east it's 938, 942 and 940. 940 was regarded as the top until recently, the OS maps have been updated to show 942 but WH only uses OS maps for 1:25k, so if you look at 1:50k here the 942 summit disappears.

From Cameron McNeish's book The Munros

Until recently, and according to all the Munro guidebooks , this eastern top was considered the highest, but the OS now admit there has been some confusion about which of the two peaks is the highest because of the way contours and spot heights are shown.
According to the OS there is a 940m spot height on the eastern peak, but no spot height on the western one. However, there is a 940m contour line on the western peak which implies, but does not guarantee, that the land within it is likely to be higher than 940m. The OS have told me they plan to add an extra spot height of 942m on the future editions of their 1:10,00, 1:25,000 and 1:50,000 scale maps of the area.
