Mount Keen

Mount Keen

Postby Palestan » Fri Apr 11, 2014 10:36 am

Hi,

It looks like it, but is Mount Keen a hill you could run up? Planning this at the end of the month for a bit of sport after getting the overnighter from London to Montrose.

Anyone done it? Or would anyone advise against it? I'm fit enough (he says....).

Thanks,

Malc

I'm no runner but I could almost say yeah. I cycled up the glen and dumped my bike just beyond the well. I walked up the zig zag bit then once on the upper plateau kinda envied some guys who'd just cycled past me - you really could just bike up from there.

Running in from Montrose might be an effort but yeah you definitely could.

Both routes from Glentanar would be runable, but would recommend going up by the track that passes behind clachan yell, as the path up to the hill from Glentanar itself, is an eroded rocky mess..
The route from Ballater is good too, but involves 1/2 a km of wading through deep heather on a very narrow stalkers path.. Nae good if you are wearing itsy bitsy running shorts - scratched legs!

Nope, I struggle to run for the bus never mind a bloomin Munro!. Mind you if I was healthier and had more experience long distance running I don't think Mount Keen would present any huge problems terrain wise. The zig zags will be a killer but they are pretty short and you'd know once you are over them the hardest part is out the way.

Hi there

I went up Mount Keen on 23rd March. There was pretty much no snow to speak of except at the very top (only enough for a small snow ball fight really) but very windy.
Really great path all the way up and 100% runable.

you have given me a great idea there, going to give this a try on the 31st of May.
I am pretty rubbish still at running, but with a goal set, I will hopefully keep motivated to train for it and be ready by then :)
