A quick question about snow around Beinn Mhaol

A quick question about snow around Beinn Mhaol

Postby RobP » Thu May 01, 2014 1:08 pm

Hi All,

I'm due to start a hike in Scotland North of Blair Atholl. One of the mountains I'm going to climb is Beinn Mhaol.

I know what the weather forecast is, but I'm trying to find out if there is any residual snow from the Winter and whether or not I need to bring the ice-axe and crampons.

Any information on this would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Beinn Mhaol is a minor top: are you planning to do the rest of Beinn a' Ghlo?

Having been in that general area (Beinn Dearg & Aonach Beag) over the last couple of weeks, I can confirm you WON'T need your winter gear

There are snow patches, generally above 2500' & the snow that is lying is soft & will usually have boot prints to follow

Freezing level is around 900m this afternoon, and we are likely to get a frost tonight and tomorrow night, so it's just possible that remaining snow could get firm and icy until it warms up again late on Saturday. However, there's not much unavoidable steep ground on Beinn a' Ghlo, except maybe the descent heading E off BCCB.

Thanks everyone - this is good news - I can leave the axe and crampons at home :D

Much appreciated!

Should be alright but just keep in mind that any snow can freeze hard and Braigh Coire Chruinn-bhalgain does hold a ring of snow (I took this pano a couple years ago in same late-season conditions - http://www.kevinwoods.co.uk/all-mountains/20120304ghlo/25.jpg) So you might have a couple snowfields to have to outflank if they are frozen solid and it can take you a bit offroute.

Snowed again last night down to 600m. Just fresh powder though - nothing that winter gear will help with.
