Light Rucksacks

Light Rucksacks

Postby weaselmaster » Mon Jun 23, 2014 6:35 pm

I was reading the Boreas Buttermilk sack review and wondering what light packs people on here use?
My current multi-day pack is an Osprey 70l number that weighs almost 3kg empty.
I had looked at the Six Moons pack, but this one seems interesting too - and has a UK outlet.
What works for you in the realms of 50ish litre capacity???

Osprey exos 48 lots of pockets and comfy. And you can stow your poles without taking it off!

Montane Grand Tour 55, think its 1.2 ish empty, can be less if you remove the spine (I dont), comfortably takes two weeks worth of gear/tent/doss bag etc, everything inside the bag ( and 5 or 6 days food),

I have a couple of smaller osprey bags that I love, but I just found the bigger ones need more strap padding, especially on long trips.

I also have a berghaus thing I bought in a mad moment, its mega comfy, but weighs a ton empty, it will never leave the shed again :D

It depends on how heavy you are going to load the pack.

There is also an Exos 56l version, it doesn't weigh a lot more then the 48l version. I have an osprey Talon 44 and I find it big enough for 2-4 day trips.

I also have a mega comfy deuter pack, it weighs 2.7kg when empty. I don't think I'll ever use it again. Almost sad :-)

Mmm had a look at the Montane one, which looks as if it would suit my needs quite nicely.
Cheers

I have the Osprey Kestrel 38 which was adequate for a month in Argentina (more of the travelling backpacking variety than hiking backpacking tho), and has plenty room for all the hiking I've done so far. (and recently a talon 22 cos the 38 is way too big for a day hike)
I also have a berghaus 70l bioflex thing, which seemed a good idea when I bought it, but hasnt seen the light of day for years.
I have a thing for osprey tho, cos I like birds of prey and a rucksack with a nice hydration pouch, plus they are the comfiest brand I've tried.

I used the Osprey Kestrel 48 for my 3 month walk, perfect size for a long distance walk / winter daytrips.
For summer daytrips I use the Osprey Talon 22

Exos for me (think it's 56l in medium size). Had looked at the kestrel 68l as I use a kestrel 38l for larger daypack/winter days but found that it's heavier and I couldn't seem to get as much in it compared to the exos.

My big sack is a 65L Mammut Heron Element. Massive, comfy and somehow 1.7kg. A bargain at teh £59 I paid for it.

I did try and convince myself to buy the Montane Grand Tour 55, but I simply had no reason to buy one. If I had to replace the Mammut, the Montane would definitely be a contender.

I tried on an Osprey Exos 48, and as nice and light as it felt, I don't like the miniature buckles Osprey stick on them.

Take a look at the Podsac Alpine 50. I've got the 40L version and love it. 1.6Kg as is, 850g in stripped down form. Much reduced price at the moment too at £59.99 down from £145.

I went for the bigger exos, 56/58.
Very happy so far.

I really wanted to like the Grand Tour 55 - in everything but fit it was perfect - but I found the hardened foam was just too firm against my lower back.

Like the Exos 58 but I'd feel a bit more comfortable having something rated to carry a bit more weight - photography gear weighs a tonne. But the higher load bearing Kestrel 58 is just more weight than I really want.

The quest continues...

Thanks for the suggestions. Ended up with the exos 58 which seems just right- liked the fit of the 48 but concerned about volume being inadequate. Liked the look and spec of the montane 55 but didn't like the fit.

Can you let us know what you think of the bigger exos when you've tried it fully loaded?
I love the 48 but one of these days i'm going to go on a longer trip and may struggle for room.
