Please help me identify these hills!

Please help me identify these hills!

Postby Lightfoot2017 » Fri Jun 27, 2014 9:18 am

Not a photo quiz as such, but more a genuine plea for help.

I was rummaging through old photos the other evening and came across these pics of me hillwalking. They’re around 30 years old (1984, 1985), and the young, good looking teenager with a full head of hair is me!

Thing is, I haven’t a clue where they were taken.

Four of us went walking up a few hills when I was a teenager. Sadly, I lost touch with my school-pals many moons ago.

I’d love it if someone could help me by identifying which hills these are.

Someone in the office suggested the B&W pic is Lochnagar. She may be right, but it would be great to have this confirmed either way.

However the other three pics have me totally baffled. I seem to recall we had maybe climbed Beinn a Bhuird? But looking at the map, there’s no sign of a road so close by.

The conical summit pic is very distinctive, so I’m hoping that’s easily identifiable.

I’d be enormously grateful if some of the old hands on here (i.e., people who have climbed a LOT more hills than me!) might be able to help out.

Thanks in advance guys.

Looks like Liathach to me - the first couple are looking down into Glen Torridon and the last one is Spidean a' Choire Liath from the east.

Glad you clarified no. 3 as I had no idea about that one!

Can't make any positive contribution here, but I don't think the B&W pic is Lochnagar. Cliffs don't look right for that.

Good grief Malky!! Are you are sure about that?! That astonishes me. Seriously.

I DEFO know I bagged Spidean a' Choire Liath in May 2012 (and almost came a cropper as a result!) I’d be ASTONISHED to learn that I bagged it almost 30 years previously!

i would be tempted to agree.

i think the cliffs are to close to you if you were in the area of the steps/boulders and if you were sitting further round in the southern corner the cilffs wouldnt be towering above you. not lochnagar for me

This is the most similar picture of Spidean a Choire Liath I can find - bit further out but it does look right:

I think it is Lochnagar, but you're right that that's not the main cliffs, they are the smaller ones to the east at around NO252854, and the prominent scree line is from Central Gully. The same cliffs are on the left hand side of this shot, though the angle is a bit different: Image

Yes. that's it. So the peak in the original is actually the E top of Stob a' Choire Liath Mor, rahter than Spidean a Choire Liath itself.

Pic 1 is looking down the approach path up Toll a Meitheach an Pic 2 is further along the ridge, probably just before the start of the pinnacles.

Difficult to tell with the different angles, but you could be right there.

Left side of this shot is a better match: Image

I agree with jmarkb. Just found this photo I took of the main cliffs. The scree patterns on the extreme left of my photo match with the ones on the right of Lightfoot's photo:
