Waterproof cover for smartphone?

Waterproof cover for smartphone?

Postby simon-b » Fri Jul 11, 2014 12:14 am

Has anyone found a satisfactory cover or case for protecting a phone from water when on the hills? I've used basic self-seal bags, but they can wear through without you noticing, so your phone drops out when you try to put it back in the bag. Fortunately mine had a soft landing on grass; might not be so lucky next time.

Thanks.

I find wrapping it in a cheapo plastic bag and putting it in an inner pocket in my rucksack has kept it wholly dry so far. Thanks for the point about the car key - I'll do the same with that in future - mine is extraordinarily high tech.

My phone is in an Otterbox tough case, and it goes with my car key and wallet in an A5 sized Ortlieb bag: http://www.ortlieb.co.uk/document-bag.html

Phone, keys, wallet etc go into my smallest dry bag these days, then get buried inside the rucksack.

Morrisons are doing two water proof bags for phones for only 3 quid right now.

Some new phones are water proof, the Samsung S5 and anything in the Sony Xperia range. You can get older Xperias quite cheap now, I'm due an upgrade so I'm looking into it.

I've got the Xperia Z1 and once the novelty of pretending to drop your phone into a lake has worn off, it's still a solid little smart phone.

But for those without a waterproof phone I've never really bothered with anything - if it's wet enough to soak through my trousers then I'm usually wearing overtrousers. 10 seconds of rain whilst taking a photo has yet to harm any smart phone I've owned.

I got a great waterproof, 'shockproof' (within reason) cover off ebay for £8.
It has a replaceable seal/grommet and they offer lifetime exchanges for faulty items. (Not normal wear and tear)
Looks good, performs great and keeps the phone usable for GPS, texts, calls, pics etc
I submerged it in the sink for an hour before first use, go out in all weathers and it still has never let any water in. :D

I have one like this - touch works well through it - and seal works well.

I have dropped two smartphones in the water (one slipped out of my shirt pocket into the sea, a few weeks later the replacement did the same thing into my boat, which I was bailing out at the time. It had about eight inches of rainwater in it...
I rejoiced to find a sealable waterproof iPhone case in a Yottie chandler's in Glasgow for a mere £15, then noticed a similar one for a fiver in the Glasgow Angling Centre.

Thanks for all the advice, everyone. There seem to be plenty of options.
