Due to the lovely weather we had, we decided to try out Byne Hill, Girvan to take advantage of the lovely views of Ailsa Craig and arran from the high view point.
Unforutnately we were unable to complete the walk as at stage 2, farmers had now added padlocks and electric fencing to the gates that we were supposed to go through to start the ascent of the hill. :(
We tried an alternative route via the A714 Brochneil Farm, however this also had restrictions to the hill, so after an hour and half of stopping and starting different routes we went back to the car at the beach and had our picnic there.

For info of anyone reading the above, the local Access Officer from South Ayrshire council went out to check this route this morning. There are currently no obstructions and the route described on Walkhighlands is open.

Rachel Shipley wrote:I walked.. the Byne Hill route (which leads straight off the A77 beside the Myoch Bridge, to avoid Daltippen Farm steading) this morning, while I was down at Girvan.

I found no obstructions on the route, today.

As you know, farmers often use electric fencing to temporarily keep animals in/ out of certain areas of land. It may be the walker, who encountered the obstruction, was just unlucky enough to be there the day the farmer was doing this! The second gate (leading into the field which now has horses in it) did have a chain wrapped ‘round it, but it was not padlocked. So easy enough to unwrap, go through and then close gate/ wrap chain ‘round again. The next gate, with the stile alongside, does have barbed wire on it, but the stile itself is unobstructed and easy to use. The following gates leading up to the monument and then the summit, were also unlocked.

So, the route is still available to use by the public.

Funnily enough I had trouble accessing tho route back in August 2009.
After finding our way blocked we asked a farmer how to get onto the path and was told the route started from the south of the hill. When we eventually reached the top we followed the path north back down and found it led us to the original path that was blocked.
I get the feeling that they don't want anyone walking around there.

We reported this issue to the Access Officer who went out in July 2014 and found no issues at that time and we have had no further reports from walkers of any problems on the route as described on Walkhighlands (there are other routes up this hill with access problems).
