Thinking of walking this route Tues or Wed starting from Braemar but not sure of current state of Derry bridge or is there an alternative (short) bypass? Any comments welcome.

There's a footbridge about 2 miles up stream which will bring you back down on the other side of the river. Although it can be crossed safely at the lodge provided it's not in spate

I was in the high part of the Lairig Ghru today. While none of the burns are overflowing, the water levels are still pretty high. Got some wet feet crossing in places away from the path. Derry Bridge aside, the rest of the route is OK, but from memory, the Derry Burn would probably be a thigh-deep wade in fast flowing water just now. As an alternative, you could keep following the Dee down to the White Bridge and pick up the Geldie.

Sorry - other way round. You could follow the Dee westwards from Linn of Dee to White Bridge, then up past the Chest of Dee.

That is a tedious and utterly boring, soul-destroying slog. The Glens Lui/Luibeg/Derry/ over the shoulder of Cairn a Mhaim route is best for an interesting route. Are you constrained by time? If not, take the opportunity to wander off the beaten track and go over the hills from high Glen Derry - Corrie Etchachan - Ben MacDui - Cairn a Mhaim - Lairig Gru . Unless you really are pushed for time, in which case take the Chest O' Dee route, but take a bicycle. Or go some other time.
