Compass

Compass

Postby algorhythm » Sat Sep 06, 2014 5:08 pm

Hey, I've recently started hillwalking and have decided to invest in some gear. One item I'm not so clued up about it a compass. I've been looking around and found one that looks OK but would like an opinion from someone who knows more about them. Can anyone advise if they would be any good for hill walking or know of any better alternative? Thanks.

N.B. Due to site security restrictions on new users I am unable to post a URL link and have had to break up the URL into three seperate objects in order to have the post approved! (Just put the three together in the address bar if you can be bothered :P)

Any Silva or Recta baseplate compass.
Here's what was posted last time this was asked http://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=28318

Also take the time to learn how to use both map and compass, and try the techniques out, somewhere you know, so that when you do need the skills you are comfortable with them

Enjoy the new found joy of the outdoors :)

Couldn't get your link to work :(

For me, have been happy with a Silva Expedition 4 as main compass and an old Silva Explorer Type 3 as backup in the rucksack - cheers :)

I once bought a hi-gear one for 2 quid, looked like a Silva, worked OK but after one season all the numbers had rubbed off, making it useless. I'd not get one again.

Another for Silva Expedition 4. Have a look on eBay for one, I picked one up for a tenner.

What the others said about the Silva Expedition 4. I would not advise getting a Silva Field type compass. I met some people on Beinn Eighe who were struggling with this size of compass trying to calculate a bearing from the map - it's just to short for comfort. I had to help them out with my compass (a SE4)!
