Phone Reception On The Hills

Phone Reception On The Hills

Postby pollyh33 » Sat Nov 22, 2014 11:03 pm

Hello all,

I know its a question that comes up on a regular basis......which network gives the best service on the hills?

I am currently with O2 and they are dreadful! :( :(

Any help would be most appreciated.

Cheers X

I'm led to believe that Vodafone are the best, but everything is patchy in the Highlands. I'm on tesco mobile, which is essentially 02. Good signal in some unexpected places, poor signal when you think it should be good. Never rely on being able to get a signal.

I've found Vodafone to be the best. I carry 2 pay as you go phones on different networks (0range and Vodafone) ..works pretty well :) Had a friend on O2 ..definitely the worst for the hills ..she never had signal! :/

Definitely Vodafone. I walk with a lot of people and I'm definitely in service more than anyone who isn't Vodafone. There are some places where other networks are better but on the whole Vodafone is definitely the best. My friend is on orange and carries an old phone with a Vodafone sim in the hills.

Remember being in aviemore on a uni trip and the locals all saying 'you need to be O2 here. We took a day trip to Inverness and once the coach moved far enough north everyone's phones went nuts after 3 days of no signal! So with the exception of aviemore I've never had a problem with Vodafone.

Vodafone, but it is still pretty useless in most glens. Went through a period when husband's Aunty had paid for rush-in- and -out carers, and I would get near the summit with horizontal snow to get messages from them about her central heating having gone off. As they weren't paid for to be boiler mechanics they wouldn't investigate to see if she had been fiddling with it again and we would have to try to sort it from 500 miles away when crouching behind the cairn to get some shelter would lose the signal.

If you're on O2 they do an app (which I'm sure must have an web based equivalent) called "My Network" which shows a map of signal coverage across the country. It's been pretty accurate whenever I've used it. Stops the wife freaking out if I'm able to say in advance that she's not to expect a call before 8pm.

Vodafone seems the most likely to get a signal, but carry an O2 (GiffGaff) simed phone just in case as well, the others dont seem to get much of the big towns in my experience...

Just looked at that, and based on recent experience I don't believe it. It shows good signal all the way from Aviemore to Glenmore, yet neither myself or three others could get any signal. I also have doubts about the extent of coverage along the A9, having lost signal repeatedly on several occasions and locations recently.

We have phoned home in Port Ellen from Kilchoman on a mobile and spoken to a nice Irish lady.

O2 could be about to change if BT take them over.
