Backpack advice

Backpack advice

Postby dancinginrainbows » Tue Nov 25, 2014 4:30 pm

So I'm planning on spending most of the summer wild camping around Scotland, after I finish my degree and before I have to get a job. My plan is to get gear over the year leading up to it whenever things go on offer.

I've done over a week before with a 30 litre pack, but with the tent and sleeping mat strapped outside. But it's a very cheap pack and I'm definitely in need of a new one, and I'd like to be able to fit everything on the inside! Looking at all the options I'm a bit confused about what I'm going to need. Around 60 litres seems reasonable, am I right? Or should I get closer to 70 so that I have more options? My main question though is about fabric - quite a few packs are very lightweight, like the Osprey Exos 58. Are these fabrics durable enough for a very long trip?

Thanks :)

Can't help but I'll be keeping an eye on this thread as I fancy the Exos 58 myself :D

I think the exos 58 would do a good job over that timescale unless you were to really abuse it and drag it over gabbro or something. Not so sure it would cope with a long winter trip with jaggy things inside. I've found it comfortable and fit for purpose so far.

Another vote for the exos 58 from me. Having one main large storage area, I find I can carry more than I'd normally expect. Compared to my kestrel bag, I don't think the exos would be as strong but it's lighter to start with.

It sounds perfect, then, thanks. Can't try it out before buying unfortunately, but I'll weight it up at home and return it if it doesn't work for me. Thanks again :)
