Sgurr Mor - Glen Kingie - Quickest route in mid-December

Sgurr Mor - Glen Kingie - Quickest route in mid-December

Postby Emmanuelle » Wed Dec 03, 2014 11:37 pm

Hello
I'm planning to do this hill from Glen Dessary and Glen Kingie Saturday 15th, so not much light. Would staying overnight the night before in the a'Chuill bothy be advantageous? It seems quite a long way from the stalkers' path to Glen Kingie and on a different path. Any advice or tips welcome!

Theres a bothy at Kinbreak as well, much closer than a'Chuill. The burn can be tricky to cross.

Or just head north up the Allt na Feithe (not a great path) Drop down to Glen Kingie and then a steep pull up to the bealach between Sgurr Mor & Sgurr an Fhuarain. This gives acess to the east ridge of Sgurr Mor. Return the same way but consider tagging on Sgurr an Fhuarain.

Start at first light obviously, should be plenty of time if underfoot conditions are good. Looking at our photos, it took us 2 1/2 hours to the bealach. 45 minute round trip to Sgurr an Fhurain and 30 minutes to the top of Sgurr Mor. Deep snow high up.

We had BIG problems with the burn in relatively dry weather both times we went, especially when we crossed lower down for Fhuarain, however, we really wished we had tagged it on to Sgurr Mor when we were out there. The MBA site says to contact the estate in hind shooting season (November to Feb) if you want to use the Kingbreak bothy: disaster to plan to include it and finding it locked. However, it is a LONG day from Glen Dessary. When we did the Corbett, there was a party aiming to stay in the bothy, but I don't think they were baggers, just a supervised group getting points for outdoors experience, so may not have crossed having stayed overnight there.
