Most remote place

Most remote place

Postby Quixoticgeek » Tue Mar 03, 2015 2:12 am

I wonder if anyone on here could help me answer a question.

Where is the most remote place in Scotland? As in the point furthest from any Road, Building, Bothy, Wind Turbine, Pub, or other significant evidence of human habitation ?

Thanks

Julia

Tip of the Pairc peninsula in SE Lewis would be as good a guess as any.

Or perhaps one of the bits of rock out in the Atlantic - Sula Sgeir.

I would of thought it was somewhere in Fisherfields, seeing as they call it the great Wilderness? but I think Malky is probably right :?

Caiteshal on the Pairc Peninsula leads Eric Yeaman's list of number of Mars bars needed to get to the summit of any hill from the road, but there may be settlements a bit near on the Harris Side across the water, so I guess malky is probably right that somewhere near Uisenis probably wins. Of course, if you google it, you get "most remote place to escape from humanity....The Garvault Hotel under Ben Griam Mor"

As far as I can remember the Ordnance Survey consider it to be somewhere in between Ruadh Stac Mor and Ruadh Stac Beag in Fisherfield.

I thought it had shut a year or two ago (you can buy a nice pair of trainers from their website), but tripadvisor advises otherwise - there are some reviews from about 6 months ago. Odd looking place - nearly cycled up there after visiting Ben Armine, but I didn't have the time or energy.

Although the OP did specify bothies in the list of banned buildings etc, so Sheneval will spoil it for Fisherfield surely. Not that I have any idea.
The two places where I've FELT most remote are in Coire Leis on Ben Nevis (not very remote in real terms, I know) and right into the Garbh Choire Mor in the Cairngorms. Both places manage to give a feeling that the ice age hasn't long left.

North Rona is pretty remote about 50 miles from anywhere. There's a lighthouse there. there's a lighthouse at uisinus on the pairc too. Its probably impossible to get far from evidence of humans. you will always find a old settlement, a fence or a wall nearby and there is cairns everywhere.

Yes, theres remote and then the feeling of remoteness...
Two places I can think of are the other Garbh Choire on Beinn a' Bhuird. Doing one of the climbs there always feels like you are the first person to have ever been there. North west ridge of Ben Aden is the other (dont try descending it!)

Sure I read somewhere that it was a point near Lurg Mhor, which is one of the remotest Munros.
