Printing off maps

Printing off maps

Postby Doddy4 » Fri Mar 27, 2015 10:54 am

From this site I wish to print off sections of the Skye trail at 1;25K. When I do it I do not get A4 size but about a quarter of that; is there a link I am missing? Are all the actions to be made from my computer.

This occurs because OS mapping is copyrighted and you are effectively attempting to "steal" their intellectual property.

There is code inbedded within their map tiles to prevent the masses from helping themselves to OS maps. The general idea is that you either go and buy a paper map or subscribe to the OS online service, thus keeping them in business.

I bought the Memory Maps disc (1:50,000) many years back....Has more than paid for itself for Scottish trips when printed onto Toughprint waterproof paper. :)

...or take screenshots from Bing maps and crop them to get rid of the non-map stuff. I often do that if it is an area that I'm not going to visit much and don't want to buy a full sheet.

Go Outdoors have a promotion on OS maps (both 50 and 25k) this week - two maps for £10, if you have their discount card :D

The OS "Getamap" subscription is well worth the money. I think it was only £17 for a year and you get full access to 25k and 50k maps to print as much and as often as you like. You can upload GPX files (either your own or from WH routes) to be printed on the map.

I didn't know there was waterproof printable paper? I'll need to look into that. I invested in a cheap laminator that I use to waterproof my maps.

My confusion. I have looked at a lot of sites info on Skye recently; I forget which site but one said the Skye Trail route was on here and you could print maps off, and in the area it does see view or print off. I was surprised this service was being offered.

I have Memory Map GB at 1;50K ; I use that extensively but print tricky bits of a route off at 1;25K (legally,I know about copyright) Clearly 1:25K is superior but is there no great need for it on the Skye Trail ?

I have the Go outdoors discount card so will look at their offer might be the way to go.

Another vote for OS getamap. I used to paste together screenshots of bing maps but the proportions would always end up off. It was ok for most things but if you needed to take a bearing you were screwed.

Also, the beta service, "OS Maps" (obviously the people at OS have never heard of SEO), allows you to print out in A3.

Just for clarity, it is legal to take screengrabs of OS 1:25k maps from Walkhighlands and print them. Our license under their Consumer Websites contract allows end users to print up to 10 copies of each map they view on Walkhighlands for their own personal use.

We pay a license fee to the OS for every session where any Walkhighlands user views an OS map. Unfortunately if we were to reformat the maps for printing such as into a pdf, then this would greatly increase the fee we pay for the session, so if screen printing is not enough for your purposes, a paid subscription service such as the one your mention becomes the better option.

You can also view our route maps on your mobile (they work much better than GPS planner on mobiles), as long as you have a network connection. If you use any app that caches and downloads OS maps without any payment (usually done from other people's servers), again that it likely to be a breach of copyright.

Personally I prefer the Timothy Pont Maps. Much more impressive than the O/S when you say you have climbed something

Another alternative would be to use good quality A4 document wallets such as those made by Ortlieb. They will keep maps on standard paper dry and will probably soon pay for themselves. You can also fold them, unlike laminated maps.
