It wasn't until I read THE PENTLAND HILLS: A WALKERS GUIDE that I realised there was such a large selection of good walks almost right on my doorstep, so I made my way down to West Linton at lunchtime for a nice easy walk round and up Mendick hill. I parked at the layby next to the entrance to the golf course and set off, the route is quite straight forward with wayposts dotted along the way and easy to follow, it is mostly on farm tracks with a small section on tarmac after the little hamlet of Garvald although there is an old railway line running parallel to the road. With the fine weather it turned out to be a very enjoyable walk.

rogers,

The Pentlands is a great place to walk. If ypu haven't tried it before a good day out is to start at Flotterstone and climb Turnhouse Hill, Carnethy Hill, Scald Law, East and West Kip and then back along the road on the south side of Black Hill to your starting point. There are lots of variations to this route for shorter or longer walks depending on what you are looking for.

I go up there quite regularly with billymck and my son if you fancy some company.

hi derek, i think i've lost count the times i have been over the pentland tops, keep going back for more, it's a great area for keeping the fitness levels up in all weather, i'm on 4 on 4 off shifts so iregular times off but try to get out there once a week if i'm not going north, anyway i've usually got a wee westie with me when i'm up the pentlands so if you see me say hello.

I'd be a shadow of my current self if I wasn't able to keep my fitness up with regular walks in the Pentlands. I like them as it's quite easy to do a shortish walk with a decent amount of ascent (which I believe is the key to hill fitness).

BTW, love the Blaeu Atlas which is now online at the NLS website :D
