i walked ben cleugh many years ago... did a 'standard' route. i can recall few facts about it: route was really nice although seemed to be quite long.
start via mill glen, then fine and clearly visible path (very boggy) to the law and final ascent to ben cleugh (seemed to be neverending, we walked and walked and walked and then suddenly we realised that it's just this 'flat belly' here, nothing spectacular. definitely we would have missed it if the summit wasn't marked)
return path via ben ever was much nicer than the ascent, a bit steep just before the quarry with milions of faint paths down.
as you can see on pictures - that times i enjoyed 'free style mountain clothing' lol :) :) :)

Looks like you got similar weather conditions to me when I did this identical walk a few weeks ago. Mill Glen is pretty special though. Can't wait for the snow!!
