Solar Eclipse 2015

Solar Eclipse 2015

Anyone of you watching the solar eclipse right now? I'll try and take some pictures but over here in Germany we get only 76% of the sun covered should be much more in Scotland...Anyway, enjoy if the weather isn't that bad...

We got a 2 second glimpse of it between the clouds, which was nice. Other than that it felt like a typical dark winter's morning.

We saw it quite well in Edinburgh.. We only had one pair of the glasses between about 20 of us though, so now all I can see is yellow blobs
Some thin cloud came across a few minutes ago, which gave a really nice view :)

Sky over here was cloudfree and we could see the eclipse really good. Special glasses were sold out weeks ago so I made myself DYI glasses made from cinema 3d glasses and pieces of an old CD. Worked quite well and I am not blind.
Here are some pics:

the filter for my camera was my from a CD piece as well, got this nice effect while trying to find the right exposure

well, my DYI solar eclipse protection glasses.

Just back from Beauly hills where I tried to get a good glimpse of the eclipse... No luck. Heavy cloud covered everything. All I managed to photograph was the view down to Beauly Firth in twilight, but it just felt like an ordinary cloudy morning to me.

As a bonus, I took a few snapshot of a flying buzzard. And had some good morning exercise

Good photos Mancunian and Scoo :D . I didn't have my camera with me, but if I had, it would have been away behind the clouds before I'd have had a chance for a shot anyway.

Took the dogs out to the park in Paisley, at first it looked like we weren't going to get to see anything but clouds.

Image

As it grew dark, probably the best part for me was when all the birds began to chatter as they would when roosting for the night.

Then we got lucky just after the full eclipse the clouds lifted slightly.

Image

The clouds drifted back over, and it looked like that was all we were going to get. Thankfully another little gap appeared for a few seconds giving us a quite a clear view of the emerging sun. :D

Here's my effort - including the sun spot. For those interested I used two polarizing filters back-to-back and at 90 degrees to each other.

Photos look great.
We were very lucky here in Dundee, beautiful sunshine with a great view of the roughly 90% eclipse.
All of us standing watching with welding masks on!
Should probably have taken a picture of that!

Here are my 3 pictures of the eclipse taken from the top deck of a bus while travelling through Kirknewton, with my Canon G11 and using the inbuilt ND filter. Only possible because of the articulated screen and the cloudy sky.

Success rate was 8/53!

Shots this morning from Tarbet Ness: On arrival it was fairly clear, and I managed a shot at "first contact," before the cloud rolled in. We were then faced with a deep cloud bank over the sea, but just a minute or two before reaching the maximum the sun appeared over the top. Incredible experience, particularly for our little grandson Callum, who was interviewed by a BBC Scotland TV crew, and featured on tonight's local news. So matter of fact in his interview, "I'm looking forward to the next one in about 12 years time. For the one after that I'll be 82 years old!!"

First contact: 8.39 am

Approaching maximum at 9.36 am

Good efforts people :) We had thinnish high-level cloud the whole way through from my vantage point, so as soon as the sun started to dim we could see it really well, your classic "silver disk through thick mist" look. Unfortunately I work in a prison so no cameras allowed.
