Brimmond Hill, near Westhill

This straightforward walk heads directly from a parking area up a good path to the summit of Brimmond Hill. Whilst bedecked with various masts and other paraphernalia this does command an excellent view towards Aberdeen and the North Sea.

Walk Description

Stage 1

There are routes up Brimmond Hill from the north side (linking with Elrick Hill and from Kingswells to the southeast, but this route starts from a parking area on the minor road on the west side of the hill. The path - which was surfaced but is badly worn - climbs steeply through the chicane barrier and up the hill. Stay on the main path - the waymarked routes are almost lost. Already there are good views looking back towards Deeside.

Stage 2

The surfaced part of the path ends briefly but the route onwards is equally obvious, with the biggest of the 5 radio masts near the summit appearing ahead. Ignore a stile (over the very end of the fence!) and then fork right up to the mast and building. At the track, rather than heading directly to the cairn and flagpole, go very briefly left - this route avoids the wetter shortcut. Also visit the war memorial on your left here, a cast iron pillar with a bronze view indicator set in a stone enclosure. From here cross the track and head to the flagpole / cairn.

Stage 3

The main reason for climbing the hill is for the excellent view over Aberdeen to the North Sea. The return route is to retrace your steps; the paths marked on OS maps that skirt the southern flank of the hill to return are now overgrown.
