Just beyond the western fringes of Aberdeen - between Cults and Kingswells - several small areas of forestry provide for short, pleasant walks. The most popular of these is described here.
Waymarked forest paths

Forest car park opposite Loanhead. Map and directions.
Park in the Forestry car park which is off the minor road opposite Loanhead. There is an information board here with a map depicting three short waymarked routes; our description runs around the edges of all three walks. Start through the gate and follow the wide path into the initially dense plantations; ignore a couple of small paths leading off to the left.
Ignore a trail for horseriders which turns off to the right near a pylon, but take the next turning on the right - which, like the main route, has green and red waymarkers. At the next junction, keep straight ahead when a red trail goes off left, and soon reach a recently felled area with more open, rural views. At another junction, keep left at each of two path junctions - still following the green waymarkers. You have now almost doubled back on yourself towards the first area of forestry.
At the edge of the trees is a cross-paths; turn right here, now following yellow markers. These soon lead through more mixed woodland, with some oaks and other hardwoods mixed in with the conifers. The path briefly curves right alongside a tumbledown stone wall before swinging back left through a gap. Eventually it returns to the main outward route close to the start; turn right to return to the car park.
