Craiglich, near Tarland

Craiglich is a rounded hill that borders the eastern edge of the bowl of farmland that is the Howe of Cromar. It provides a straightforward ascent and is a fine viewpoint.

Terrain

Forest and moorland landrover tracks with rough surface. The gate at the start of the walk is often kept locked.

Accommodation

Walk Description

Stage 1

Park in a large layby on the north side of the B9119 road, a few hundred metres east of the Queen's viewpoint. There are two gates on the opposite side of the road to this layby; the walk begins through the more dilapidated left hand gate which gives access to a grassy track heading directly up the left edge of a field. The gate is often kept locked - if climbing it, take care not to cause further damage. The track eventually curves right and enters the trees at a second gate - this time with a stile on the right.

Stage 2

As the track curves round the hillside there are superb views across Cromar, dominated by Morven; to its left is a distant Lochnagar and to the right is Pressendye. Look out for a tiny cairn on the left around 800m after the gate; it marks where to turn left onto a much fainter landrover track, heading more steeply uphill.

Stage 3

The track quickly climbs clear of the trees and continues across the flat heathery summit plateau. The top is marked by an OS trig point beside a partially-collapsed beehive memorial - though there is no plaque and the purpose of this monument is not clear. The views, though, are excellent; the Mither Tap of Bennachie now becoming prominent.

Stage 4

To return to the start simply retrace your steps.
