This section of the Formartine and Buchan Way links Udny Station with Ellon, the largest town on the route and an interesting place to look around. Ellon also has most services including cafes, pubs, shops and bus links.

Walk Description

Stage 1

From the main road through Udny Station take Arn Place onto Chestnut Walk where there is a parking area near to the recreation field. Follow the edge of the recreation field past a picnic bench to access the Formartine and Buchan Way and turn right to head north passing the old platforms and heading under the road bridge. It is also possible to access the Way just west of the road bridge although there is no parking here. After passing the last houses of Udny Station the Way crosses open farmland with good views.

Stage 2

Pass a small burn before heading down to cross a minor road and continuing ahead on the far side. This part of the Way is popular with cyclists, horses and dog walkers so care should be taken to watch out for other users. The route runs though farm land and fields of grazing sheep with a small windfarm visible before reaching Logierieve wood. Here it is possible to detour to the left for a short woodland ramble on a marked path. The station building, now a private house, has a distinctive clock facing the old platform.

Stage 3

The Way is full of wild flowers in spring and summer with swathes of pink Rosebay Willowherb particularly dominant. At the Mains of Mosstown the Way can become very wet underfoot after heavy rainfall for a short section. Afterwards the countryside becomes more undulating with good long distance views before the houses of Ellon come into view.

Stage 4

Take care crossing the A920 before the final section to Ellon, crossing the wide Ythan River. Just after the viaduct it is possible to turn right and follow the attractive riverside path into the centre of Ellon. A slightly shorter route into town is also possible from where the Way heads down to meet the B9005, turn right here to follow this road into the centre of the town. Ellon, known as the Gateway to Buchan, makes a good base and has some interesting stone buildings in the centre as well as most services and good bus links.
