Carnoustie Links, Carnoustie no. 1

1. The walk starts from the seafront - from the centre of Carnoustie follow the road under the railway line and there is a parking area immediately opposite. From here head west (to the right as you look out to sea) to pass a leisure centre and follow the surfaced shared path near the seawall.

2. Soon the famous Carnoustie Golf Links can be seen on the right, with the large white Oxford Hotel adjacent. The golf course attracts players from all over the world and regularly hosts important tournaments such as the Open. After a turning area there is a warning sign about the golf course. Follow the path over the bridge and then immediately take the path to the left, before the red dog bin. This keeps to the coast at the edge of the course.

3. When the path rejoins a golf course track keep left towards the edge of Barry Links firing range - a red flag signals any firing. Do not go through the gate into the range but turn right to follow the track along the edge of the golf course, keeping to the right of the firing range boundary fence. This track provides pleasant views over the golf course and the countryside beyond.

4. Keep following the track until it reaches a junction next to some young pine trees. Turn left here and continue on the wide track next to the range boundary fence. Soon the track turns right, to head away from the fence. Here there is a choice, either take the small path which leads all the way round the pond, popular with wildfowl, or continue on the track - the two routes join up later. If taking the path round the ponds, follow it and turn right to pass between the fenced rifle range road and the pond and turn left when the golf track is rejoined.

5. The track follow the edge of the golf course and ends just before the practice field. Take extreme care here, as players drive westwards. If it is very busy you may have to climb the gate onto the road to the left and follow that for the short distance to the cycle path just before the level crossing. If crossing the practice area, turn right once the cycle path is reached. Follow the surfaced track (which is also used by cars) around the edge of the course. Opposite Golf Street railway station turn right and then left to follow the road past the Ladies Golf Club and the Oxford Hotel to reach the start of the walk.
