1. The walk begins at the Glashan Burn forestry car park, signed off a minor road from the A83. There is a long (16km) red-waymarked route heading right around the loch; this may be more suited to mountain-bikers, whereas the route described here follows the yellow markers. From the parking area, start by continuing along the tarmac road. As the route approaches the dam and reaches a fork, go left. The dam was built in 1961 to provide water to drive the turbines at Lochgair power station; during construction work an ancient dug-out canoe was found here.
2. Soon a marker post indicates a path off to the right. This is a short detour, leading to a picnic area and viewpoint giving the best outlook over the Loch Glashan reservoir. After enjoying the view, return to the track and continue along it to the next fork; here, bear left. After about 300 metres look out for a clear grassy path climbing off to the left - the marker post was missing at the time of our visit. Follow this path uphill, soon giving good views back over Loch Glashan beyond the pines.
3. Another marker post indicates a second short diversion, this time to visit Risby's Loch - a small forest lochan with a picnic table. This is a great spot for dragonflies. Return to the main path which crosses a small footbridge and plunges through dense forest plantations. Eventually it leads down to the access road for the forest car park. Turn left to follow this back up to the start.
