Kirnashie walk, near Carradale no. 1

1. This circular walk can be joined from the Port na Storm car park in Carradale, or from the Carradale Network Visitor Centre. A third option is to begin from the Grianan car park on the B842 as described here. Take the straight path uphill signed for Kirnashie Walk. Turn right when you reach a track and keep following this. Before the track starts to head downhill, where there are good views of Arran ahead, take the marked track to the right which climbs uphill.

2. Keep straight on when a track joins from the right and then turn off onto a marked path to the right. This eventually climbs high over the slopes Cnoc nan Gabhar and a great viewpoint for Kintyre and the islands. A short detour to the left takes you to a picnic table which makes a good rest spot.

3. The path descends fairly steeply at first and then levels off. Keep left at a small junction and then when a path marked by red waymarkers joins from the right. This is the Deer Hill circuit which could be combined with this walk in a variety of ways. Now there are good views down to Carradale and the forestry gives way to sparse mixed woodland and mill pond is passed on the left. At the bottom of the hill turn right along a track, passing behind a recreation field. At the junction the Port na Storm car park lies to the left; to continue the Kinashie walk following the blue waymarkers keep on the track to the right (which is signed for Deer Hill - this sign assumes you are doing the walk the other way around).

4. There are occasional glimpses through the trees to the left over the lovely Carradale Bay. Ignore paths off to the left, though one of them may tempt you with the option of a visit to the tearoom at the Network centre a short distance off the route. The Deer Hill route goes off to the right uphill, but the Kirnashie walk simply continues along the track.

5. The track winds left and then right before taking a straighter course towards Grianan. There are good views over the glen to the left as the track climbs gently, though further on the conifers begin to close in on the final section. This section can seem long but it does eventually take you back to the Grianan car park and the start.
