Strone woods, Glen Lochy

TYNDRUM, DALMALLY AND BRIDGE OF ORCHY

Strone Hill woods are a fine remnant oakwood almost hidden by the surrounding forestry of Glen Lochy. There are two short waymarked trails; this delightful and very easy walk is a combination of both.

Summary

Excellent waymarked paths throughout.

1. There is a signposted forestry car park off the A85 marked for Strone Hill. The waymarked trails begin between the two attractive stone-built benches. Take the left hand trail first, signed for 'Waterfall woods' and waymarked in red. The trail soon leaves any conifers behind and passes through some beautiful mature oakwoods.

2. The trail is short and soon bends round to the right. When a junction is reached, turn left to make the short detour to view the waterfalls - where the River Lochy plunges over some steep slabs. Return to the main path and continue along it.

3. Soon another junction is reached. The red route continues straight ahead to lead immediately back to the car park. To continue the walk, turn left onto the green route. Continue along this path; at the next fork an unmarked path goes off to the left; keep to the right here, still following the green route.

4. Further on the path forks again. The green route makes a loop from here and returns to the same point, so it doesn't really matter which way you go. The oaks are mixed with birches in this part of the wood and the many nestboxes help ensure a rich birdlife. The river is close by but usually well hidden by the trees, whilst a bench provides a chance for a rest. Once the loop is complete, return along the trail back to the junction with the red route. Turn left here to return to the car park.
