Screel Hill, Dumfries & Galloway
Route: Screel Hill, near Palnackie
Date walked: 30/08/2012
Met up with Strider for a walk up Screel and Bengairn. He hadn't been up Screel, but had gone up Bengairn. I hadn't been up Bengairn, but had been up Screel! But we only ended up doing Screel.....and really slowly as my tendon was beginning to ache Bengairn i will be back!
A huge thank you to Strider for his patience and going somewhat slower for me!
So the car was parked at the Screel car park and we headed up the hill (unlike the rather random route that i did last time i went there) We were really lucky with the weather. No rain today, but there had been huge downpours the days before, so there was plenty of mud and boggy bits to wade through!
On our way up instead of going straight up we turned left and went along the side of Screel then came up onto the middle of the hill. We went over to the cairn - well Strider did! My achilies was sore by this point. Stopped and had a bite to eat, then went back across to the other point of Screel. We then went down the more direct route. This was slippy, muddy, boggy and had water running down the hill! Tree roots were a tricky bit in parts. It was easy to slip on them. Found that with my achilies tendon aching walking in the mud (with my boots on i hasten to add!) was actually ok. It was when i put my heel down on stone that it hurt. The whole walk was mega-slow!!!! But enjoyable. Tried looking for my lost fleece hat, from months ago, on the hill also, but that didn't appear. Ended up losing my sunglasses. Strider went back and had a look for them, but to no avail. So if anyone is wandering about on Screel and finds a pair of Boots sunglasses they might well be mine! Did put the sunblock on rather late so have ended up with a rather glowing colour to my face! Also managed to tear the waterproof trousers The tear is only a couple of inches at the most, so will have to do something about that. Unfortunately i managed to tear them on the backside
Even with it being slightly hazy in the distance the views were beautiful. Some hills we could easily make out. From Screel we could make out the route for going across to Bengairn. This was easier due to so many trees being cut. Although i feel somewhat gutted that again i didn't make it to Bengairn, i feel good at having been up Screel as it was such a beautiful day. Strider enjoyed the visit up Screel and again i must say thanks for being patient with my slow plodding!
