Bochel circuit, near Tomnavoulin no. 1

1. The walk starts from a signed parking area at Tombae Quarry near Tomnavoulin, the turning is just opposite the impressive Church of the Incarnation, built in 1829. From the parking area walk back down to the road and turn left and follow the road for a short distance. Just after the entrance to a house on the right, follow a stile and take the track heading downhill to the right. The route is waymarked for the Brochel circuit, walk number 10 by the Glenlivet Estate which has made a great effort to open up walking and cycling routes in the area.

2. Follow the track across a field and into a wood, bear right and ignore a track to the left. Cross the bridge and very soon afterwards turn sharp right to cross a field to another bridge. Cross this and then climb the bank diagonally left and cross a stile. Continue along the top of the steep bank with the stream below keeping to the edge of the field. The path undulates, crosses a boardwalk and another stile, and eventually comes down steps to a footbridge over the stream. Cross the stream and follow the path across the field and up the slope opposite.

3. When the path reaches a track turn right and follow this through woodland. Keep on the main track, ignoring a small path which heads down to the water on the right. After a while the track heads away from the valley and into open moorland. Continue following the track as it becomes fainter in the peat and heather. Cross a stile and continue heading slightly left towards a gate in a fence.

4. Don't go through the gate but turn right at the fence and follow the indistinct path as it runs alongside the fence. There are lovely open views of the rolling countryside. Cross a stile and continue straight ahead. There are often lapwings and oystercatchers in the fields below. Before the path reaches a house it turns sharp right up a, sometimes muddy, track. Don't get confused with the waymarkers for another walk, keep following the ones for walk number ten.

5. Follow the track uphill until a pedestrian gate is reached on the right. Go through this and follow the track through the forestry plantation. After a while pass through a double stile and follow the track as it emerges from the forest and contours round above a river. Cross the river on a bridge and go through the gate and up the hill. When the track emerges on a minor road turn right and follow the road around a bend and past a house. After a stream turn right along a farm track. Keep following the main track which passes through a number of gates and grazing fields.

6. When the track reaches a rougher section of moorland look out for a path running downhill to the right. There is a marker post. Follow the narrow path downhill and then to the left and over a stile. The path climbs up through sparse trees and then keeps close to a fence. Cross another stile and keep the fence on your left. Soon you climb down steps and rejoin the outward route at the bridge over the stream. Don't cross the bridge but turn left and retrace your steps back to the start of the walk.
