Viewpoints walk, Grantown-on-Spey no. 1

1. Start the walk from the centre of Grantown-on-Spey. Take Seafield Road, signed for Viewpoints Walk, just to the left of the Co-op on the upper part of the main street where there are grassy sections. Follow this road passed the houses and the caravan park at the end and go under the old railway line.

2. Straight after the bridge turn right, following the sign and cross a small wooden bridge and go through a gate. Divert up the steps to the right for a better view of the waterfall and then return to the gate and take the right hand fork that leads up onto the old railway. This is now part of the Dava Way, a 23 mile route linking Grantown and Forres and passing Dallas Dhu distillery on the way.

3. Once up on the old railway line, turn left and follow it for a short distance until a signed path leads off to the left. Climb up this path through sparse woodland and then between two rows of wire fencing. The path climbs quite steeply and then offers a short detour over a stile to the left to visit a viewpoint overlooking the town with a seat. Return to the main path and continue uphill.

4. Cross two sets of gates and continue climbing passing another seat with a fine view. The path is now narrower and weaves through the mixed woodland which includes a number of large juniper bushes. As the route reaches a fence and an open field the path heads up towards the right and continues through trees and joins a track for a short distance. Soon the top viewpoint is reached with a panorama naming the hills which you can see on a clear day.

5. Follow the marker post at the far end of the small group of Scots Pines and pass a twisted tree to descend to a clearer path below the crag. The path keeps to the right of a fence and continues straight on to join a track. Pass through a farm gate on the track and pass a number of houses on the left. After a while of heading downhill you reach the old railway line at a missing bridge. The Dava Way continues to Forres on the left, but we take the right hand path and walk back along the old railway line.

6. The route follows a deep cutting of the railway and passes above the caravan park to return to the junction on the right where you descend back to the outward part of the route. After going through the gate and under the railway bridge follow the road back into the centre of Grantown-on-Spey.
