Bannockburn, near Stirling

Bannockburn, scene of Robert the Bruce's famed victory over the English in 1314, has a fine statue of the Bruce and a visitor centre. The route described heads through fields, along the Bannock Burn itself, and through some modern housing areas and provides a good leg-stretcher following a visit to this historic site.

Accommodation

Walk Description

Stage 1

Park at the Bannockburn Visitor Centre, run by the National Trust for Scotland; it is usually open from March to October. The walk begins from the far corner of the car park and follows the path across the green towards the massive circular monument which commemorates the point at which Bruce unfurled his banner as the battle began. Continue through the monument to visit the majestic statue of the mounted Bruce.

Stage 2

Head back through the memorial and then turn right down a couple of steps to follow a path through a cutting. Keep left to pass Borestone Bowling Club and then turn right along the minor road. This leads to the little village of Chartershall; continue almost to the old bridge on the left side of the road, turning left just before it into a field, signposted as a path to the Whins of Milton. Continue across the field - sometimes muddy - keeping the drain on your left and passing through a small gate at one point. Go straight across a minor road, keeping beside the drain until the main road into Stirling is reached. Cross this carefully, heading to the right along it. Turn left and then right onto a road, signed Milton, which passes behind the petrol station.

Stage 3

Take a left turn onto Colliers Way and then turn right by the boulders onto a lane which passes to the left of Milton Mill (a private house). This becomes a path and leads to the Bannock Burn at a weir. Cross the footbridge beyond and then turn left, heading downstream, keeping on the main path at any forks to continue through this dell almost surrounded by housing. Do not cross the burn and eventually you'll emerge on a lane which then meets The Brae, a small road which has a bridge across the burn. Turn right, uphill, along this road past some fine old houses, and then turn right again onto Coal Wynd.

Stage 4

Keep straight ahead along Coal Wynd; as it climbs there are good views to the right over towards Stirling Castle and the Wallace Monument. Coal Wynd becomes a lane and ends at a t-junction with a path. Turn right here, signed for Milton, and then left at the next path junction shortly after.

Stage 5

The path runs through fields and then over a footbridge near Beaton's Mill. Follow the road up past some modern houses to rejoin the outward route at Collier's Way; turn left here and then right to retrace your steps back past the back of the garage, then left and right onto the main Glasgow Road. Continue along this until it leads back to Bannockburn visitor centre.
